Veterans Day tribute still happening despite damages from the storms

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – The annual Veterans Day ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Park is still scheduled despite damages from the recent hurricanes.

Crews have invested hours of work to get Veterans Memorial Park ready for the event.

“The day after the storm I tried to drive through the park, but it had no accessibility. In the 20 years that I’ve been with the county, I’ve never seen so many trees and damage to our park. My immediate thought was that we were not going to be able to hold Veterans Day for our veterans this year,” said Frank Strom, director of consumer and veteran services for Hillsborough County.

In addition to the downed trees, the retired Marine said there was damage to the park amphitheater. “Our community has suffered enough, and we’re going to go ahead and make this event happen,” Strom said.

Monday’s tribute is Hillsborough County’s 60th annual Veterans Day ceremony. Community members didn’t hesitate to help.
