Mahopac-born State Trooper Nicholas Abbondola injured in upstate pedestrian crash

A State Trooper from Mahopac remains hospitalized after he was struck and severely injured by a passing vehicle on a truck stop in Colonie Nov. 2.

New York State Police said Trooper Nicholas Abbondola, a Mahopac native, was responding to a routine traffic stop involving a towed vehicle on I-87 southbound in Colonie on Saturday, Nov. 2, when he was struck by a passing vehicle at around 12:30 p.m.

Police said Abbondola and Brett M. Dempsey, 29, a tow truck operator from Clifton Park, were struck by a pick-up truck while standing outside their respective vehicles and loading the vehicle onto the truck. Dempsey sustained some severe injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation.

Abbondola sustained severe injuries, including multiple fractures and other injuries which required surgeries. He had recently joined the State Police in October 2023 and was assigned to Troop G in Latham.
