North Miami mayor’s race heads to recount. Who will join incumbent in runoff?

The race for North Miami mayor is headed for a recount today to determine who will compete in a two-person runoff next month.

Catch up quick: Mayor Alix Desulme received the most votes (36.8%) in the four-person election, but no candidate received a majority, so a runoff is required.

  • Retired doctor Héctor Medina leads former lawmaker Daphne Campbell for second place by just 32 votes, or 0.1%, requiring a machine recount.

What’s next: The recount, required if candidates are within 0.5% of each other , is scheduled for today at 2:30pm.

  • A manual recount would be required if Medina and Campbell remain separated by fewer than 0.25% after the machine recount.

After that: Desulme will face the recount winner in a Dec. 3 runoff .

  • City Council races for Districts 1 and 4 will also head to a runoff that day.
