90 MPH Gusty Winds, Rain, and Snow Sweep California’s Sierra Mountains, Western Nevada

Today, gusty southwest winds are stirring up challenging conditions for travelers, aviators, and outdoor enthusiasts across the Sierra and into western Nevada. Winds reaching up to 90 mph in mountain ridges and nearly 50 mph in some valleys have heightened risks, while rain and snow showers follow a cold front moving through the region.

A brief pause in this active weather is expected Tuesday, offering a momentary respite with cooler but drier conditions. Highs will hover around the lower 40s in valleys and 30s in higher elevations, with nighttime lows dipping into the 20s, even colder in mountain areas.

The reprieve is short-lived, however, as another storm system approaches midweek, bringing renewed rain, snow, and strong winds. Drivers planning to cross Sierra passes should check Caltrans and Nevada 511 for road conditions and expect reduced visibility due to slick, snowy conditions today.
