Greenville social bar, restaurant hub closing by mid-December, blames liquor liability law

The downtown entertainment and nano brewery known as The Velo Fellow announced its closing in a social media post on the morning of Nov. 10, citing operational costs, recovery from COVID, and the liquor liability laws in South Carolina as reasons to end operations.

The independently owned restaurant, music venue, and trivia space at 1 Augusta St., Ste. 126, has been a popular stop in Greenville’s West End for nearly 14 years. According to Will Polatty, one of four co-owners of The Velo Fellow, the doors will close on Dec. 8, and an auction for items from the establishment will take place on Dec. 16.

The Velo Fellow will be remembered as a safe social hub for service industry workers, musicians, creatives, vendors, trivia lovers and more.

“With the rising cost of rent & bar/liability insurance, it has ultimately been decided to not renew the lease at the end of this year,” said Velo Fellow’s farewell social media post.

“No one wants to exist in a world solely made up of corporate chains/entities and big box stores,” the post added.
