Police accepting donations to help family after North Carolina officer dies ‘suddenly and unexpectedly’

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — Fayetteville police said that donations are being accepted to help the family of a veteran officer who died “suddenly and unexpectedly” last week.

Capt. Shawn Michel Collins of the Fayetteville Police Department served as an officer with the department for more than 27 years, according to a news release from the city police department.

Collins, 49, who died Wednesday, was born in Fayetteville and graduated from Westover High School, his obituary said.

Collins, a Central District and SWAT commander, “was devoted to his work and his fellow officers,” his family said in the obituary.

He leaves behind four children and a wife.

“He loved working in his yard, watching UFC Martial Arts, taking his son, Noah on trips around the yard on the riding lawn mower, and fishing with him in the pond across from his house,” Collins’ obituary said.

Collins developed a bond with fellow officers during nearly three decades with the department, his family said.
