NC GOP expected to push through private school vouchers bill before supermajority ends

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — With Republicans expected to lose their complete supermajority in Raleigh come January, the GOP is trying to take full advantage of their current numbers. They hold 3/5 of the seats in both the Senate and House, allowing the caucus alone to override any veto from the governor.

The General Assembly is scheduled to convene at least two times before the balance of power is set to change in January when Democrats will likely gain one seat in the House.

During their session next week, GOP leadership promises to bring House Bill 10 to the floor and override a veto from Governor Roy Cooper that was handed down in late September. The legislation provides nearly half a billion dollars in funding to a private school voucher program . Cooper accused the idea of being “devastating for education across the board.”

House Speaker Tim Moore previously said North Carolinians are on their side, that “there are some families who want to have an opportunity to have a choice.” Moore argued too many families are forced to attend underperforming public schools.
