NYC trash bin rules go into effect to combat rats

NEW YORK (PIX11) – New rules regarding trash bins and residential buildings in New York City went into effect on Tuesday.

The rules are intended to eliminate the accumulation of black garbage bags on city sidewalks that add to the rat problem .

Properties with one to nine residential units have to use garbage bins with secure lids for collection by sanitation trucks.

Buildings with 10 to 30 units will be able to choose between stationary on-street containers and smaller bins with wheels as the program is expected to expand sometime next year.

The city expanded its curbside composting pick-up to all five boroughs just last month. Nearly half a million New Yorkers have already bought the city’s new trash bins since July, according to a spokesperson for the Department of Sanitation.
