Police officer shoots, kills man in southeast Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A deadly overnight shooting in southeast Las Vegas involving a Las Vegas Metropolitan police officer is under investigation.

The shooting occurred in the 6900 block of Wine River Drive, a block west of Sunset Park after police responded to the area around 12:40 a.m. and heard screaming coming from inside a residence and kicked in the door to enter.

Captain Kurt Mckenzie said the police found two people fighting and one was armed with a knife.

“Officers provided verbal commands to drop the knife at which time an officer discharged his duty weapon striking an individual,” he said.

The man who was shot was transported to UMC where he was pronounced dead, McKenzie said.

He also added before the shooting, officers arriving in the neighborhood noticed several cars had broken windows and there was a broken window on the residence police entered.

Per department policy, the name of the officer involved in the shooting will be released in 48 hours and Metro will provide additional information within 72 hours. This is the 13th officer-involved shooting of 2024.
