Grill torches Eastern Washington for 33, leads Mizzou to 84-77 win

It was the ugliest play of the game. Up 10 points with just under 18 minutes left in Mizzou’s meeting with Howard on Friday, graduate senior guard Caleb Grill caught the ball high on the left wing. Graduate senior center Josh Gray set a ball screen for him to the right. He didn’t use it. Grill pump faked, made two dribbles toward the basket, then stepped back behind the arc, hoping to create enough separation between himself and his defender to get a shot off. The move didn’t shake his defender, though. In desperation, Grill pump faked again. His defender didn’t bite. Finally, with 19 seconds still on the shot clock, Grill, a right-hander, tried leaning into his defender and hoisting a shot up with his left to bait the officials into a foul call. The ball missed everything, sailing out of bounds. None of the refs blew their whistle.
