DES MOINES, Iowa — In October the City of Des Moines had to deactivate two of its three fixed location speeding cameras leaving only the speeding camera on eastbound I-235 active.
Due to a new law, cities are required to have permits from the DOT to use automated speed cameras and the DOT denied many of Des Moines’ requested cameras including the two fixed-position cameras on Grand Avenue.

Sergeant Paul Parizek with the Des Moines Police Department said that he hopes the DOT will reconsider the Grand Avenue cameras when the city submits an appeal to its decision.
“There’s a lot of thought and some science behind the locations that we chose and we thought we presented a very good argument, particularly using the Grand one as an example. There’s a park right there in the school a couple of blocks away. So we’ve appealed those. We’re hoping that we can get another look at those from the state, maybe a better understanding of what our thought process was and see if we can get those back in place, because there’s definitely a safety concerns in those areas with those two places there,” Sergeant Parizek said.
