Man accused of choking woman to death near Times Square hotel

MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) — A man is accused of choking a woman to death near a Times Square hotel last month in a brutal attack caught on surveillance video, according to police and sources.

Jaheem Warren, 33, was arrested Tuesday and charged with murder, assault, and strangulation, police said.

Warren allegedly put the 23-year-old woman in a chokehold outside the Hotel Riu Plaza New York on West 46th Street in Times Square early on the morning of Oct. 29, sources and police said. Officers received a call from the hospital at around 1:30 a.m. notifying them an unidentified woman was assaulted.

The victim, Leslie Torres, was unconscious when she was rushed to the hospital and put on life support until she died on Nov. 4, according to the NYPD.

Hotel surveillance video showed a man attacking Torres until she lost consciousness. Sources said Warren was allegedly high on drugs and has a history of addiction.

Investigators don’t believe Warren, a New Jersey resident, and Torres, who lived at a nearby homeless shelter on West 45th Street, knew each other.
