Knoxville adding traffic delineators to Henley Bridge amid increased usage

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — With the Gay Street Bridge nearing its fifth month out of use , the City of Knoxville shared an update on the latest traffic impacts and ongoing repair efforts.

The Gay Street Bridge has been closed since June 25 when a “compromised element” was discovered during a routine inspection. The closure has brought additional vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians to the neighboring Henley Bridge.

To create a protected bike and pedestrian lanes, the city is working with the Tennessee Department of Transportation to add traffic delineators to the Henley Bridge. Work is expected to be done by mid-December.

“With it being so backed up on Henley Street. I now have to sit through the Blount Avenue red light for like four cycles just to turn left. It’s definitely added to the commute time,” Mood Ring Vintage owner Carly Baskette told 6 News in July.
