AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – It’s the proposal for new trash service in Augusta, but for some commissioners believe it’s garbage.
“It’s not fair right now to the citizens to do this. We get one day a week pickup and sometimes that doesn’t always happen,” said Commissioner Catherine Smith McKnight.
It’s the long awaited proposed new contract for city trash service, at an annual cost of $440 dollars. That is nearly a $120 dollar increase over this year.
“I think we may have to go back to the drawing board people are hurting and try to put this tax on them to it’s not a good thing to do,” said Commissioner Francine Scott.
Under the proposal, recycling would not be part of the city package. Customers who want to recycle would have the option of creating a separate account with their hauler.
“I think the last survey we did, only 24,000 people were using recycling, which means that we’re losing money,” said Commissioner Bobby Williams.
But commissioners are looking at a plan that reduces service yet calls for a 37 percent fee increase.
