Storm System Set to Bring Showers, Mountain Snow, and Winds to Northern California

Northern California is bracing for a change in weather as a slow-moving low-pressure system arrives tomorrow, bringing showers, isolated thunderstorms, and mountain snow through the weekend.

Today, the region is experiencing dry and seasonable conditions, with mostly sunny skies interrupted by high-level clouds from the northwest. But that will change starting Wednesday, when the system brings two waves of precipitation, primarily affecting the mountains and foothills. A Winter Weather Advisory is in place for elevations above 5,500 feet in the Sierra, with snowfall expected to intensify between Wednesday and Friday.

The first wave of rain will hit Wednesday morning, with the heaviest rainfall expected during the late morning and early afternoon. However, the valley may see less rain due to shadowing by the Coast Range, with Shasta County and the foothills being the hardest hit. The Sierra could experience periods of heavier snow along I-80, especially as pockets of intense rainfall move through. There’s also a slight chance of thunderstorms.
