Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services is looking to renovate the downtown Canton fire station to have permanent housing for firefighters and create additional space to expand services.
On Nov. 7, the Canton City Council heard a presentation from city staff on a proposal to deed the property to the city’s DDA and allow the county’s fire department to renovate it.
The council is scheduled to vote Nov. 21 on potentially deeding the downtown Canton fire station property to the Canton Downtown Development Authority for the redevelopment of the station. If this is approved, an intergovernmental agreement between the county and the DDA for the redevelopment of this site would also be approved, according to city documents.
“We are happy to keep that fire station downtown,” Canton Mayor Bill Grant said after hearing the staff report.
Due to the building’s condition, firefighters at the Downtown Canton Fire Station (Station 16) have been housed in a mobile unit inside one of the station’s bays since 2017, when Canton Fire Department’s services were consolidated with the county’s, CCFES Capt. Michael Sims told the Tribune in an email.
