It’s a good idea to bundle up, grab your umbrella and be prepared to give yourself extra time to get where you need to go as you get ready to head out the door Wednesday. A cool and wet system tracking into the Pacific Northwest will bring rain and snow, gusty winds and cooler temperatures to northern California today, and the potential for active weather will linger through the end of this week. Moderate to heavy snow projected for our higher elevations have prompted a Winter Weather Advisory to be issued for the Sierra down to 5500′ from 10am Wednesday through 10pm Friday. Northern Trinity County will be under a Winter Weather Advisory from 4am through 9pm Wednesday, and Siskiyou County areas will be under a Winter Storm Warning from 4am through 4pm Wednesday. Clouds have been increasing overnight, and showers are tracking into the Northern Mountains very early this morning. Moderate to heavy rain is likely from the Northern Mountains into areas of the valley from Red Bluff to the north by around 9am, and all valley areas are projected to have showers by late morning. We’ll then have showers becoming more scattered this afternoon and evening. Redding is projected to end up with more than an inch of rain today while the rest of the valley is projected to end up with a half an inch or less. A half inch to an inch of rain is likely in our foothill and mountain zones. Snow levels will dip to as low as 4500′ today. Temperatures are starting out in the 40’s to lower 50’s in the valley, 30’s to mid 40’s in the foothills and Northern Mountains, and 30’s in the Sierra. We’ll have sustained winds up to 20mph out of the south, and gusts up into the 35mph to 45mph range will be possible today. High temperatures are projected to range from 52 to 58 degrees in the valley, upper 30’s to lower 50’s in the foothills, and upper 30’s to upper 40’s in most mountain zones later today.
