Somali Pirates Sentenced for Kidnapping American Journalist

Two Somali pirates have been sentenced to 30 years in prison for kidnapping American journalist Michael Scott Moore and holding him hostage for 977 days.

Moore was abducted in 2012 while researching piracy in Somalia. He was held captive in various locations, including a hijacked ship.

The pirates, Abdi Yusef Hassan and Mohamed Tahlil Mohamed, played key roles in Moore’s captivity. Hassan led the extortion efforts, while Mohamed was responsible for security.

Hassan, a former Somali minister of the interior, also used his home as a base for the pirates. Tahlil, a former army officer, provided weapons and training to the pirates.

Both men were convicted of hostage-taking, terrorism, and firearms offenses. They were sentenced on Tuesday and will also face one day of supervised release.
