A 2-year-old was struck and killed by a car Wednesday afternoon on Milwaukee’s northwest side, according to police.
The suspected driver, a 41-year-old man, stayed on the scene and was arrested, Milwaukee police said. Criminal charges will be referred to prosecutors.
Milwaukee police said the child “ran into traffic” on North 60th Street, which is four-lane road. Near the site of the crash, the speed limit is 20 mph for a school zone.
The child suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital by Milwaukee Fire Department paramedics, but died from their injuries. Police and fire officials did not provide the gender of the child.
Milwaukee police responded just before 12:30 p.m. to North 60th and West Hustis streets in the Wyrick Park neighborhood, just south of West Good Hope Road.
Saia Praise, who lives off of North 60th Street, said he took his dog out for a walk and saw a group of people surrounding something — or someone — on the street. He saw a woman appearing to be lying in the road and covering it with her body.
