Murder trial set to start for Lockport man accused of stabbing woman to death in Elmira

A Niagara County man accused of stabbing a woman to death in Elmira more than three years ago will finally go to trial the week of Nov. 18.

Stephen M. Pesesky III, 34, of Lockport, New York, was indicted by a Chemung County grand jury in late October 2021 for second-degree murder and first-degree assault in connection with the death of Jennifer A. Karda, also of Lockport, who was 34 at the time.

The incident took place around 1:45 a.m. Oct. 16, 2021 in the 900 block of Johnson Street, a few blocks from the Elmira College campus, according to the Elmira Police Department.

Officers and paramedics attempted to provide immediate life-saving measures on Karda, but she was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The assailant left the scene before officers arrived, but police took Pesesky into custody later that day.

Police at the time didn’t elaborate on the relationship between Pesesky and Karda or why they were both in Elmira, but said they were known to each other.
