Keeping Kentucky horses and jockeys safe has just gotten better with new digital tool

KENTUCKY ( FOX 56 ) — It is a new era for care and safety in the thoroughbred industry, with the launch of Horse Insight.

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) said it has worked for months to develop the unique tool, which combines a horse’s career and medical history into one platform.

Prior to the addition, regulatory veterinarians could spend long hours researching a horse’s history leading up to race day.

“For every single horse, there’s a human on its back, and when we keep that horse safe, we keep the rider safe,” said Shari Silverman, HISA veterinary liaison.

As a former regulatory vet, Silverman said the portal will enhance ways to keep health and safety a top priority in such a demanding field.

“It is their nature to hide when they [horses] are weak; when they have something bothering them, it is their nature to hide it. So, we’re looking for all these hints that can occur that kind of point us, that we need to investigate this further,” said Silverman.
