NY AG announces $45 million settlement with nursing homes over allegations of neglect

The New York Attorney General announced a $45 million settlement Thursday with a nursing home operator accused of neglecting its residents.

Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement that the Centers for Care, which operates nursing homes in White Plains, The Bronx, Queens and Buffalo, engaged in “years of resident mistreatment and neglect” on top of committing financial fraud.

“Residents at these Centers nursing homes endured years of tragic and devastating mistreatment and neglect, while the owners made millions of dollars in profit,” James said. “Centers’ owners operated the nursing homes with insufficient staffing so that they could pocket tens of millions of taxpayer dollars meant for resident care.”

According to James, $35 million from the settlement will go into a fund dedicated for improved resident care and staffing.

An attorney for the Centers for Care did not immediately return a request for comments about the settlement.
