SOUTH CAROLINA (WJBF) – FEMA is reminding South Carolinians who received federal disaster assistance after Hurricane Helene to only use the grants for intended purposes.
According to FEMA, letters are provided explaining what the payment can be used for.
“If applicants spend the payment on anything other than the purpose for which it is intended, they may be denied future disaster assistance,” a statement released Thursday reads. “In some cases, FEMA may ask that the money be returned.”

FEMA recommends people keep receipts “for their disaster spending for three years to document that the money was used to meet disaster-related needs.”
Recipients who obtain insurance settlements to cover the same expenses must reimburse FEMA.
Those with questions about what is eligible can call the FEMA Helpline at (800) 621-3362.
