PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) – For the first time in its century-long history, Sunshine Division is delivering Thanksgiving meal “turkey kits” to families who need them most.
The holiday has always been the Portland-based nonprofit’s busiest time of year, but the need continues to grow. Executive Director Kyle Camberg told KOIN 6 News it has grown “exponentially.”
“It was just a few years ago where maybe a couple hundred people would walk through your doors, but now we’re at the stage where it’s thousands of people,” Camberg said.
In response, Camberg said the food relief organization decided to lean into their home delivery services.
“We said, you know what? Let’s build 2,000 boxes or kits…and let’s home deliver those with our army of volunteers that we have, and let’s take those out the weekend prior to Thanksgiving,” he said.
Sunshine Division has more than 4,000 volunteers throughout the year, but Camberg said the best way to help out this time of year is by donating food or money to the cause.
