Winter weather advisory in Reno, Tahoe, and Nevada-California border Friday

A winter weather advisory is in effect starting at midnight for Lake Tahoe and 1 a.m. Friday for Reno, Carson and Minden, the National Weather Service warns .

Here’s what to know about how much snow to expect and how to check road conditions:

How much snow is expected Friday in Northern Nevada, Tahoe?

One to 3 inches of snow is expected below 6,500 feet west of U.S. 395 near Susanville. Six to 10 inches is expected around Lake Tahoe. The higher elevation points in the Western Nevada valleys should prepare for up to 3 inches of snowfall.

How much snow will we have in Reno?

Though Renoites could see an icy commute Friday morning, snow accumulation in the valley is uncertain.

“This system brings forecasting challenges, with boom/bust potential,” the NWS tweeted Thursday afternoon. In the low-snow scenario, there will only a bit of new snowfall in the Sierra.

In the high-end scenario, snow could come to valley floors with a potential for a rain-snow mix. However, valley floors are warm, so accumulations could be limited even in the high snow scenario.
