City of Erie releases crime stats for first half of 2024, violent crime continues to fall
“Having been a police officer for 34 years, I go through some of the neighborhoods and it’s just amazing the change I see,” said Dan Spizarny, City of Erie Police Chief.
The third quarter numbers are in. Homicides, people shot, aggravated assault and rape all down. There were just three homicides in the first three quarters of 2024 in the City of Erie.
There have been two more since, but that’s still significantly lower than 13 last year. Chief Dan Spizarny said a reduction in gang violence is causing a ripple effect.
“The number of shots fired, the number of people being shot. A lot of that was tied to gang activity in the city and with some recent arrests over the last two years and our continued focus on that area has really helped bring the numbers down,” Chief Spizarny said
