Tulsa Police warn about new discrete card skimming technology

TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa Police Department is warning the public about the new discrete card skimming technology that has made its way to Tulsa.

“We want to make the public aware that this stuff is out there and it is happening right now,” said Lt. Andrew Weeden with TPD’s Financial Crimes Unit.

Weeden explained that while skimming technology has been in Tulsa for a long time, these new skimmers are so discrete most people will never know it’s there.

“You may go up there to make a purchase and you may pull on it like you have been and nothing comes off in your hand, so you think you are good.”

These new skimmers are called deep insert skimmers and Weeden said the components are the exact same as those in overlay skimmers, just harder to detect.

While the hidden nature of this threat is concerning, there are still ways to protect yourself and your card information.

Using tap to pay is an easy way to avoid these types of skimmers.
