Moped rider dies in Waikiki collision

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The collision occurred around 9:43 p.m. on November 13, 2024, when the moped operator was traveling eastbound on Monsarrat Avenue, just east of Kalakaua Avenue.

Police said the rider rear-ended a parked, unoccupied vehicle on the side of the road.

The impact caused the moped operator to become pinned beneath the vehicle, requiring emergency responders to extricate him from the wreckage.

He was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

Authorities said the rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Preliminary reports suggest alcohol may have been a factor in the incident, though it is unclear whether speed or drugs played a role.
