Padre Island residents call for bicycle lanes after two cyclist crashes within a month

North Padre Island residents urged the need for safe bicycle lanes and sidewalks during a committee meeting on Wednesday, which came shortly after two car crashes involving cyclists happened on Whitecap Boulevard in less than a month.

The meeting was held by the Island Strategic Action Committee, which advises the Corpus Christi City Council on the development and implementation of the Mustang-Padre Island Area Development Plan. The plan, initiated in 2021, was designed to promote development east of state Highway 361/Park Road 22 and between Zahn Road and Whitecap Boulevard to further tourism on the island.

Last year, the city introduced the Padre/Mustang Island Mobility Plan to the committee and began taking public feedback.

The mobility plan, furthering the initiative of the area development plan, is a study that is analyzing the existing transportation system for walking, cycling, golf cart and watercraft pathways and will yield a plan for a comprehensive transportation network that connects residential neighborhoods to commercial and retail uses.
