Months after a lawsuit over Tennessee’s new bail law, two more advocacy groups have voiced their support for repealing it.
And sixteen months after a Collierville doctor was shot and killed at the Campbell Clinic, the man accused of killing him will go before a grand jury.
Here’s what was on the docket for the week of Nov. 11.
Memphis advocacy groups voice support for lawsuit against Tennessee bail law
Two Memphis advocacy groups, Stand for Children Tennessee and the Official Black Lives Matter Memphis Chapter, have filed an amicus brief in support of a lawsuit against a Tennessee bail law that passed during last year’s legislative session.
The lawsuit was filed by the ACLU of Tennessee and local bail advocacy group Just City earlier this year . It alleges that the bail law — which prevents judges from considering someone’s financial condition when setting bail — violates the constitution.
“We’re seeing the harm without even talking about the specifics of the law’s implementation in Shelby County,” Just City Executive Director Josh Spickler told The Commercial Appeal after the lawsuit was filed. “The law is just completely out of keeping with very settled case law around the issue of bail in America. We don’t think there’s any other state that has a law like this. It’s a wild outlier. We mention in the complaint that this is very, very unusual — never seen before.”
