Air Force Awards Silver Star to First Female Airman
The Air Force has bestowed the Silver Star, its third-highest honor, upon Captain Lacie “Sonic” Hester, an F-15E instructor. She played a crucial role in shooting down over 80 Iranian drones during an attack on Israel last April. This marks a historic achievement, making Hester the first female Air Force member to receive the Silver Star and only the tenth female service member overall.
Large-Scale Air-to-Air Engagement
The shootdown of the drones was the largest air-to-air engagement by the United States in over half a century. Hester and her pilot, Major Benjamin “Irish” Coffey, coordinated the efforts and used their fighter’s missiles and Gatling guns to bring down multiple drones.
Recognition for Exceptional Bravery
Along with Hester and Coffey’s Silver Stars, the Air Force recognized several other individuals involved in the mission with various medals. These awards honor the bravery and professionalism of the men and women who defended against the Iranian attack.
Women in Ground Combat Units
Hester’s achievement comes amidst controversy over the role of women in ground combat units. Despite the recent criticism, women have been gradually integrated into combat roles since 1993. Hester’s Silver Star serves as a testament to their capabilities and contributions to the nation’s defense.
