Case could be dismissed for APD officer charged with driving drunk in patrol vehicle

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Back in June, a New Mexico State Police officer had an unusual DWI stop because the person he stopped was actually an officer with the Albuquerque Police Department (APD). The officer was in uniform and driving his police unit; he turned out to be driving drunk.

Now, that APD officer has pleaded guilty, but if he stays out of trouble, that misdemeanor charge could go away.

In early June, a state police officer saw an Albuquerque Police Department vehicle going nearly 112 miles per hour on I-25 near Bobby Foster Road late at night. After pulling over the vehicle, he found an APD officer in full uniform inside.

Once on the side of the road, APD Officer Jordan Hernandez told the state police sergeant he wasn’t staying in his lane because of a low tire and other reasons.

However, the state police officer said Hernandez had bloodshot eyes, and he smelled alcohol on his breath. After failing field sobriety tests, Hernandez was arrested.
