Easton Area High School’s annual bonfire has been canceled, according to a district document obtained by The Morning Call.
While Northampton County enacted a 30-day burning ban last week due to ongoing drought conditions, it exempted the Easton Area traditional pre-Thanksgiving day bonfire, instead leaving the decision up to the school district and Palmer Township police and fire departments.
But the district has decided to cancel the annual bonfire, though a pep rally still will be held the Wednesday leading up to the traditional Easton-Phillipsburg football game.
The school district document observed by The Morning Call lays out the details.
“Please be advised that the annual Thanksgiving Day Game bonfire which was scheduled to take place on Wednesday night … has been canceled for this year due to the existing countywide burn ban,” according to the document, which was signed by John Remaley, the district’s police chief.
“The decision has been made to continue with the parade that usually precedes the bonfire on that evening,” Remaley said. “However instead of beginning the parade at Cottingham Stadium and traveling to the high school for the bonfire, this year’s parade will originate at the high school and travel to Cottingham Stadium.”
