Former Lehigh Valley brewery one step away from conversion to apartments

The project to turn a former Northampton brewery into apartments has cleared its final major hurdle.

The borough’s planning commission conditionally approved plans Wednesday evening for the Brewery Lofts at 1249 Newport Ave. The building housed the Northampton Brewing Corp., maker of Tru-Blue beer, from 1898 to 1951.

Developer Nat Hyman wants to put 64 studio and one-bedroom apartments into the six-story structure.

Zoning Officer Jerry Serensits said borough council will have to give final approval, which could come at the Dec. 5 meeting. He said the conditions are “typical for a project like this.”

Hyman expects those to be easy fixes.

After council’s approval, Hyman said, it will then just be a matter of securing permits the following week and beginning construction, which should take about 18 months.

“This has been the most supportive municipality,” Hyman said. “They’re very easy to work with, and they’re excited about the project.”

Hyman Properties bought the building in September 2023 for $635,000, according to Northampton County real estate records.
