A Des Moines man has received probation after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in connection to a motorcycle crash in April this year.
Ryan Leory Gile, 33, of Des Moines received a two-year suspended sentence on Thursday in the death of 41-year-old Des Moines resident Mitchell Ohland. Ohland died in a motorcycle crash on April 7 after hitting the side of another vehicle.
Des Moines police said in a May news release that evidence indicated Gile allegedly was drag racing his motorcycle with Ohland at the time of the crash. Both drivers’ speeds reached up to 70 mph.
Gile originally was charged with two counts of homicide by vehicle, driving while suspended, operating a non-registered vehicle and failure to provide proof of financial liability. Court records indicate the two counts of homicide were amended to involuntary manslaughter.
Gile consented to be sentenced without a hearing.
His sentence will run consecutively with sentences for domestic abuse and malicious prosecution charges in other cases. He received a total of six years suspended sentence, meaning Gile will avoid jail time and instead serve probation.
