T-Town TNR helps reduce stray cat population with “Snip, Tip, Hooray” program

TULSA, Okla. — T-Town TNR is helping reduce the stray cat population in the Tulsa area with their “Snip, Tip, Hooray” program.

The purpose of the program is to help reduce the growing stray cat population in Green Country in a safe and humane way.

TNR stands for trap, neuter and return. In these types of programs, stray cats are captured safely in cat traps and then transported to a vet where they can be either spayed or neutered and vaccinated.

Afterwards, the cat is eartipped to allow rescuers to identify in the future if the cat has already been neutered/spayed. The procedure is done while the cat is under anesthesia and doesn’t cause the cat significant distress or change in appearance. The cats are then returned to where they were captured from.

“We have literally seen a 70% decrease in the number of stray cats coming tp our municipal animal shelter, Tulsa Animal Services, and that’s huge,” said Samantha Polen, the executive director of T-Town TNR. “That means we’ve gone from thousands of cats to hundreds of cats.”
