A centuries old Hawaiian game, Konane, can be played every 3rd Saturday

HONOLULU (KHON2) — It’s both a fun and educational opportunity, as Na Lama Kukui lifestyle & design center launches a new monthly series to teach people how to play the ancient Hawaiian game — Konane — also known as Hawaiian checkers.

WakeUp2Day’s Chris Latronic went live from the second floor of the Na Lama Kukui Lifestyle & Design Center to learn more about this new event starting this weekend.

He met up with Konane Expert, John Kaohelaulii to discuss his Kuleana towards the revival of this 10-century old game.

John explained the History of Konane, how to play the game, as well as the Free Konane Games Every third Saturday at Na Lama Kukui.

It was not only fun to learn but also taught many Hawaiian Values including Ahonui ~ Patience, Perseverance, Confidence; Ha’aha’a ~ Humility; & ‘Ike loa ~ To See Much and Keep Learning.

Ancient Hawaiians regarded Kōnane as more than just a game. The strategic and analytical skills required to be a successful Konane player were useful in both times of war and peace.
