Governor Kathy Hochul has signed a groundbreaking bill aimed at expanding access to fluoride treatments for children across New York State. The legislation authorizes registered dental assistants and licensed practical nurses to apply fluoride varnish, making it more convenient for pediatric patients to receive this critical preventive care.
Highlighting the importance of the law, Governor Hochul stated, “Fluoride is scientifically proven to prevent cavities and protect our kids’ teeth. As a mom, I know how tough it can be to get dental appointments and how crucial good oral hygiene is. By signing this legislation, we’re expanding access to fluoride treatments to keep our kids healthy and strong.”
This initiative is especially focused on improving access to care in underserved communities, where dental services are often limited. The new law aims to increase efficiency in dental offices and ensure that more children receive preventive treatments that are vital for long-term oral health.
State Senator Nathalia Fernandez emphasized the equity-driven impact of the legislation, saying, “Dental disease should never stand in the way of a child’s health or success. Expanding access to fluoride treatments helps break down barriers to care and addresses disparities in underserved areas.”
