CONCORD, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — More than 300 runners laced up their shoes Saturday morning for the inaugural ‘Officer Jason Shuping Memorial 5k’.
The first race of its kind was in memory of fallen Concord Police Officer Jason Shuping who died in the line of duty in 2020 by an attempted carjacking suspect off Bruton Smith Blvd.
The event started at 10 a.m. following a short program in honor of Officer Shuping on what would have been his 29th birthday. His widow spoke before running in the race, along with nearly 300 people who traveled from as far as California, Georgia and Florida.
The race raised more than $2k for the Concord Police Foundation to benefit programs for police officers and their families.
