Small but mighty: Hamster rescue operation gains traction

The term “rescue animals” usually brings dogs or cats to mind. But hamsters, gerbils, and even rats are looking for families too.

Little Sister Hamster Rescue, located on Patriot Drive in the Point Place neighborhood, is a non-profit helping the smallest pets find their forever homes.

“One of the biggest benefits for having a separate space for them is calm,” Caitlyn Carter, the organization’s CEO and president, said. “Small pets are prey animals by nature. Too much excitement and noise can cause stress for them.”

Carter, who is a youth librarian at the Sanger Branch Library, cares for the animals with the help of her husband, Nathan. He serves as the organization’s financial officer.

The rescue’s current location is in the couple’s home.

While searching for supplies for their own pets online, Carter found a need to provide an option for those who might not be able to afford shelters’ surrender fees.

“As we’re getting our name out there, people are approaching us,” Carter stated.
