$40 Million Boost for California Communities Recovering from 2018 Wildfires

Five California communities devastated by the 2018 wildfires are set to receive $40.7 million in federal disaster recovery funds. Announced by Governor Gavin Newsom, the funding will support job training and workforce development programs, helping these regions rebuild economically and socially.

The grants, part of the 2018 Community Development Block Grant—Disaster Recovery Workforce Development program, focus on training low- to moderate-income residents in essential trades. “Rebuilding after wildfires means more than restoring homes—it’s about restoring lives,” said Newsom, thanking federal partners for their support.

Funds will aid initiatives in Butte, Lake, Los Angeles, Shasta, and Ventura counties. Projects include training programs in construction, healthcare, and disaster resilience, ensuring these hard-hit areas emerge stronger and better prepared for the future.
