PORT CHARLOTTE — Coral Creek Waterway Bridge will undergo renovations after Charlotte County workers discovered a missing piece of rebar in the structure.
The planned renovations provided by the original contractors on the 2010 bridge project will mean no lengthy legal battle and will reinforce the crossing, according to Charlotte County commissioners.
“This will save the taxpayers money,” Commissioner Joe Tiseo said.
John Elias, the county’s public works director, presented the negotiated agreements at a Tuesday meeting with the County Commission. The agreements are with Thomas Maine Construction, Inc. and Consor Engineers, LLC.
Public Works reached out to both firms after staff discovered “surface blemishes” earlier than expected for the Placida-area bridge.
That led to the discovery of a missing piece of steel reinforcing rebar inside the cement structure, with temporary repairs stabilizing the bridge.
Elias stressed that the Coral Creek Waterway Bridge is safe to travel on and should continue to function throughout its planned life without reduced weight limits.
