As Cumberland works on official election results, state Supreme Court seat hangs in balance

All eyes are on Cumberland County to see if its official election results, which are expected to be certified later Monday, could affect a state Supreme Court race that is one of the closest in history.

The county commissioners’ race may also be impacted as county Boards of Elections staff members resume the official vote tally, aka, canvass at 4 p.m. The board started the canvass on Friday at the elections headquarters building on Fountainhead Lane in downtown Fayetteville.

Democrat Allison Riggs, an incumbent justice on the N.C. Supreme Court, leads Republican Appeals Court Judge Jefferson Griffin by just 24 votes out of more than 5.5 million cast across the state, according to multiple news accounts. In unofficial results, Riggs leads Griffin in Cumberland County, 79,640 votes to 56,863 votes.

Cumberland is one of eight counties in the state that has yet to file its official canvass results, according to the N.C. State Board of Elections. The others are Chatham, Craven, Forsyth, Halifax, New Hanover, Randolph and Sampson.
