Fire damages Budget Inn motel in Waynesboro

WAYNESBORO – The Budget Inn in Waynesboro was damaged by a fire Sunday night, prompting the closing of one of its two buildings, a fire official said.

No injuries were reported.

Located at 2240 W. Main St. in Waynesboro, firefighters responded to the Budget Inn shortly before 9:30 p.m., according to Deputy Chief George Fitzgerald of the Waynesboro Fire Department. He said the blaze was knocked down relatively quickly, but two rooms and the front office of the motel were damaged.

“It expanded into an adjacent room and the front office,” Fitzgerald said.

The fire started in a guest’s room, Fitzgerald said, and got into the attic of the one-story building and then spread. The cause appears to have been multiple surge protectors plugged into one another, one that was “completely overloaded,” which caused an electrical short, Fitzgerald said.

A man in the room where the fire began managed to escape unscathed.

The motel has two buildings but just one remained open Monday, according to Fitzgerald.
