Mecklenburg County to discuss settlement over Colonial Pipeline fuel spill

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — Mecklenburg County Commissioners will consider a measure on Tuesday night that could result in a settlement over the Colonial Pipeline fuel spill.

The pipeline runs from the Texas Gulf Coast to the New York area and sustained a leak in Huntersville in August 2020. Two teenagers were riding all-terrain vehicles when they discovered the leak.

More than 2 million gallons of gasoline and other fuels ended up in the soil. Colonial Pipeline has since recovered more than 1.8 million gallons.

Commissioners will consider a deal for Colonial to complete repairs and remediation at Mecklenburg County’s Nature Preserve. In exchange, the county will give other property to Colonial to use to continue to company’s remediation efforts.

The commissioner’s meeting begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Uptown.
