Special election ordered for Milwaukee council seat left open by Jonathan Brostoff’s death

A special election has been scheduled for the east side Milwaukee Common Council seat left vacant by the death of Ald. Jonathan Brostoff earlier this month.

Council President José G. Pérez on Monday ordered the election for the District 3 seat to take place in conjunction with the April 1 spring election, and, if needed, the Feb. 18 primary.

Nomination papers may be circulated starting Dec. 1, and the deadline for submitting nomination papers to the city Election Commission is 5 p.m. on Jan. 7, Pérez wrote in the letter to Election Commission Executive Director Paulina Gutiérrez.

Whoever wins the election will fill the remainder of Brostoff’s term, which ends April 17, 2028.

Brostoff, 41, died Nov. 4 .

He joined the council after running unopposed for the vacant District 3 seat in November 2022.

Brostoff had previously served in the state Legislature after winning a hard-fought Democratic primary in 2014.
