In a town without cabs, a transportation option will soon be gone in Erie, Pa.

Peggy Allin found a niche and then spent 18 years expanding on it after purchasing Hansen’s Errand Service in 2006.

The business, licensed in 13 counties by the state Public Utility Commission, operates a fleet of vans and cars that take customers to medical appointments, pick up mail for local companies, haul passengers to regional airports, deliver gamblers to the casino, provide shuttle service for weddings, deliver holiday hams and see local college students safely to the airport in time for holiday breaks.

Despite the rise of ride-share services, in a town without a taxi cab company , demand has grown in recent years.

But Allin has decided that Dec. 15 — 18 years to the day since she bought the business from Barb Hansen — will be the last day for Hansen’s Errand Service at 2904 Pittsburgh Ave.

How it began

Barb Hansen, who had been a cab driver for years, opened Hansen’s Errand Service, in the late 1990s.
