Pineapple casserole? Why Augusta-area residents say it’s a favorite Thanksgiving side dish

There is sure to be a ton of turkey, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pies, and other hallmark Thanksgiving foods enjoyed this holiday. But whether it’s an entrée, side, or dessert, some local families have more unique additions to their Thanksgiving meals. The Augusta Chronicle turned to Facebook posts asking for the community’s input and followed up to talk with residents.

One of the most popular foods mentioned was pineapple casserole. It often involves bits of pineapple, cheese, sugar, flour, cracker crumbs on top, and the whole thing is baked. Dana Valerio of North Augusta said her mother made it every year for Thanksgiving for about 20 years.

“I made it for my husband about 10 years ago and he loved it so now I make it every year when we host Thanksgiving,” she said.

Polly Hargrove of North Augusta also makes a pineapple casserole. She first discovered it through a church friend who gave her a recipe and has since found other recipes. With hers, she uses crushed pineapple instead of chunks.
