Stockton City Council hires Katherine Roland as permanent city clerk in a unanimous vote

Six months after former Stockton City Clerk Eliza Garza ‘s contract expired, the city has selected her replacement.

The Stockton City Council appointed Katherine Roland to the post during the Nov. 12 meeting with a 6-0 roll call vote. Mayor Kevin Lincoln was absent from the meeting.

Roland received a five-year employment agreement, providing her an annual compensation of $274,470.15, which includes salary and benefits.

“I feel like we got this one right,” District 3 Councilmember Michael Blower told the crowd during the council comments portion of the meeting.

Roland was named interim city clerk on May 14 , a position she held until she was hired as the permanent, full-time city clerk. Roland joined the city of Stockton as deputy city clerk in January 2015, specializing in records research. She held the deputy city clerk position until she was promoted to assistant city clerk in July 2019.

“I’ve always wanted the type of job, like what the clerk’s office is, where it’s very detailed, it’s very records heavy, history is super involved in it,” Roland told The Record in an interview following the vote. “Whenever the original posting for deputy city clerk came out and I read it, I was like, ‘That describes me. That’s absolutely me.'”
