California Attorney General Rob Bonta criticized an Orange County Superior Court decision dismissing the state’s lawsuit against Huntington Beach’s Measure A, a voter ID requirement set to begin in 2026. The measure, approved by 53.40% of voters, amends the city’s charter to mandate voter identification for municipal elections.
Bonta argued that Measure A unlawfully conflicts with state law and Senate Bill 1174, which prohibits local voter ID requirements, asserting that election integrity is a statewide concern. Despite the ruling, Bonta vowed to continue legal action.
Huntington Beach Mayor Gracey Van Der Mark celebrated the dismissal, calling it a victory for the city’s rights. City Attorney Michael Gates praised the court’s decision, though he acknowledged the fight is far from over. The state has 20 days to amend its petition.
